Sitka TriBe Celebrates TOurism

April 20, 2026

It's only been a few weeks...and I continue to reflect upon the Annual Cultural Heritage Tourism Conference presented by the Sitka Tribe of Alaska —and the powerful conversations that continue to resonate well beyond our time together in this gathering place.

What stood out most was the shared recognition that cultural heritage tourism is at a pivotal moment. Across global communities, there is both an opportunity and a responsibility to create clear, intentional pathways that move from inspiration --- to implementation.

The dialogue this year didn’t shy away from the hard truths:

🎯 The need for strategic planning that is grounded in community voice and stewardship.

📍The importance of translating cultural assets into visitor-ready, bookable experiences that account for the shifting perspectives of businesses and travelers

🌏 And critically, the call for accountability and follow-through among industry partners to ensure these efforts lead to real, measurable impact

These were not just ideas—they were active, sometimes challenging, discussions that pushed all of us toward a more focused and forward-looking approach.

I was honored to contribute to the general session on cultural tourism—sharing perspectives on how informed travelers are reshaping expectations, and how destinations and cultural institutions must evolve with purpose, clarity, and collaboration.

What makes this gathering in Sitka so special is its willingness to lean into these conversations with honesty, respect, and a shared commitment to progress.

To be part of this evolving, and truly revolutionary program once again is both humbling and energizing.

Now comes the most important part: what we do next.
